Rabbit Awareness Week Day #3

Day 3 and we are here to help you understand the delicate digestive system of a rabbit 😊 Today’s discussion is about commercial food pellets / nuggets / muesli). We recommend that you always follow the manufacturers guidelines on the packet when feeding your chosen commercial food. Never be tempted to over feed it as this can cause weight gain and prevent them from eating enough hay and grass. A small, measured amount of pellets/nuggets each day will ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals they need. Tip: get hold of an eggcup and keep it with the bag of food. It’s a handy way to measure out food.

❗Muesli-style foods ❗ are not recommended for rabbits. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh showed that rabbits fed on a muesli diet can result in some of the health problems below. 🐇Reduced gut function 🐇Overgrown teeth 🐇Eating less hay 🐇Lower water intake 🐇Obesity.

If you are currently feeding a muesli style food to your rabbits you should gradually transfer your pets onto a nugget based food over a period of between 14 and 28 days.
